NLIHC sent a letter to congressional leaders on November 5 to express support for the “Fair Chance at Housing Act” (H.R. 3685/S. 2076) and to urge members of Congress to sign-on as co-sponsors. More than 40 national, state and local organizations representing housing advocates, law enforcement groups, human rights activists, and others signed the letter. The signatories represent a coalition of organizations united in the belief that all people, including those who have been involved with the criminal justice system, deserve access to safe, accessible, and affordable housing.
The “Fair Chance at Housing Act,” introduced by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) in July (see Memo, 7/15), proposes reforms to the screening and eviction policies used by federally assisted housing providers that would help ensure individuals who have been involved with the criminal justice system have access to federal housing assistance.
