House Committee on Financial Services to Hold Hearing on “Restoring Accountability at HUD”
Apr 07, 2025
On Tuesday, April 8 at 10 am ET, the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services’ Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will convene a hearing titled “Decades of Dysfunction: Restoring Accountability at HUD.” The hearing will focus on what the Republican majority claim are long-standing challenges within HUD, with particular attention to oversight, transparency, and systemic inefficiencies that have hindered the agency's ability to fulfill its mission.
One of the key witnesses set to testify is Mr. Stephen M. Begg, Acting Inspector General at HUD, who will share insights from recent investigations and audits conducted by the Office of the Inspector General (OIG). In the Committee’s memorandum on the hearing, Republican majority staff emphasizes the “critical need for congressional oversight and review by the Department of Government Oversight and Efficiency (DOGE) to ensure transparency, accountability, and operational effectiveness within the agency”. The hearing will also consider the “HUD Transparency Act of 2025” (H.R. 225), a bill which would require the HUD Inspector General to testify each year on the OIG’s efforts related to fraud, waste, and abuse; audits, investigations, and reviews; opportunities for HUD to “progress and succeed”; and an assessment of HUD’s resources in fulfilling its mission.
