NLIHC will host a session of “Tenant Talk Live” – a webinar geared towards renter and resident leaders – on Monday, January 9, at 6 pm ET. During the webinar, NLIHC staff will lead a conversation reflecting on tenant organizing in 2022 and setting goals for 2023.
2022 was a big year for tenant movements across the country. In Maryland, advocates from Renters United Maryland (RUM) worked hard to get funding for the Access to Counsel in Evictions Program that they passed in 2021. Tenant advocates in Kingston, New York, faced challenges when their rent reduction measure was met with a lawsuit that ended in a judge ruling that the reduction was unconstitutional. These examples offer just a snapshot of the efforts of tenant organizers across the country in 2022, the victories they achieved, and the obstacles they faced. The upcoming webinar will focus on the ups and downs of tenant organizing in 2022 and provide participants an opportunity to reflect and reset as we resume our organizing efforts in 2023.
Below is the agenda for the upcoming webinar:
- Introduction and moderation
- Sid Betancourt, housing advocacy organizer, NLIHC
- Conversation and Google Jamboard session (facilitated by Sid)
- Audience Q&A and open discussion
- Closing remarks
See you all on Monday!
