In a new post on NLIHC’s On the Home Front blog, tenant advocate Tiffiny Graven explores a range of perspectives on the rent-wage gap and its ethical implications. Surveying the views of tenants, landlords, policymakers, and economists, Tiffiny ultimately makes the case for incorporating the perspectives of those with lived experience in efforts to devise policy responses to the affordable housing crisis. “Addressing the rent-wage gap without [consulting those with] lived experience is akin to entrusting the design of a ship to those unfamiliar with the seas,” she writes. “Navigating the intricacies of housing programs requires expertise and understanding” – including from those with lived experience.
